$5 Dog toy turns to surgery
We all know that there's something wrong when a Labrador decides not to eat their breakfast. One minute she was playing with her new rope toy, the next it disappeared. The only clues left behind were traces in the landmines.
This client presented with a 4 year old Labrador who has a mysterious case of gastrointestinal upset. She had eaten her dinner the night before but was up all night vomiting. She refused her breakfast and that's when we knew something was definitely wrong. This food loving Labrador needed immediate attention.
The Veterinarian performed an extensive examination and ran a few blood tests. This confirmed that there were definitely a few issues. Bloods showed hemoconcentration, mild azotemia, INCR phosphate, low electrolytes, and mild ALT elevation.
We jumped into action and admitted the pup for some x-rays. The scans indicated large foreign bodies in the stomach and intestines. We called the owner with this update and received confirmation to go ahead with an exploratory laparotomy.
Thankfully the surgery was a success and the patient has now made a full recovery but will not be getting any toys for birthdays or Christmas from now on!
